FIRST AID CLASSESThis course covers airway management, rescue breathing, and one-rescuer CPR for adult, child and infant victims. It includes first aid for common injuries and illnesses as well as patient assessment. This is an excellent class for those wanting to know how to treat victims for a few minutes until an ambulance arrives. This is a noncredit class. This course teaches advanced first aid skills that are applicable to accidents, injuries and illnesses seen commonly at home, work, recreation, or while traveling. CPR is included. Certificates in advanced level first aid and adult, child, and infant CPR are awarded upon successful completion of this course. Basic first aid is not required to enroll in this class. This class is excellent for people who work or spend time in rural or remote areas or in higher risk activities, or are responsible for the health and safety of groups. EMT CLASSESPrerequisite - CPR certification at Professional Rescuer or Health Care Provider level. This course follows the current guidelines to prepare students for Utah Certification as an EMT. The focus is on skills and equipment likely to be used as an ambulance or hospital based EMT. Common occupational settings for EMTs are ambulance, firefighters, ski patrol, and hospital emergency room technicians. For information on the upcoming schedule click here.
Prerequisite - CPR certification at Professional Rescuer or Health Care Provider level This course is for the student who wants the knowledge, skills and training from the EMT course, but is not going to work in the field as an EMT and therefore does not need certification. These students are not, and cannot become eligible for Utah Certification as an EMT based on this class. EMT - I CLASSESThis course expands the EMT-Basic's skills to include advanced management of hypoprofussion, airway, and drugs/medications. Utah State certification is possible after successful completion of this class. However, students may take this course for knowledge and experience and not certify. PARAMEDIC CLASSES The Center for Emergency Programs has entered into a Consortium Agreement with Mt Nebo Training to provide Paramedic training at the University of Utah. The course is offered through Mt nebo Training but is taught on campus and University of Utah academic credit is available. The class is three semesters (12 months) in length and starts in January. Class meets Monday through Thursday from 6:00 to 10:00 PM and many Saturdays in Annex 2095. This course is open to those who meet Utah and National requirements. These requirements include: one year as an EMT Basic or above, completion of college level classes in math, English, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology and either one year of time working in the medical/EMS field or a utah EMT I certification. The training follows national guidelines put forth by FEMA and is generally recognized across jurisdictions Topics include first aid, communications, structural assessment, light search and rescue, fire suppression, disaster psychology, and hazard mitigation. Emergency Planning with emphasis on individual and community preparedness. Topics include first aid, communications, structural assessment, light search and rescue, fire suppression, disaster psychology, and hazard mitigation. Emergency planning with an emphasis on the occupational setting. Issues related to personal, group, and company wide planning and recovery are addressed. Document storage and retrieval, equipment protection and replacement, task shifting, and organizational design are important concepts for the recovery phase. WILDERNESS CLASSESThis course is designed for people who spend time in wilderness or remote settings or lead others into the wilderness. It covers the topics and skills taught in advanced first aid or first responder courses, but applies them to the wilderness setting. This course is excellent for scout leaders, wilderness guides, search and rescue personnel or anyone else that is responsible for emergency care in a wilderness setting. Students will learn about research design and management and then participate in faculty sponsored research projects. For information on the upcoming schedule for this class click here. This course is designed for outdoor recreationists, rescue workers, and other health professionals who require a need to develop nutritional skills related to the wilderness environment. Students will apply the knowledge they acquire in this course by conducting a practical field exercise utilizing nutritional planning. This course is designed to be taken by advanced undergraduates (sign up for 5230) or graduate students (sign up for 6230). This course covers the mechanics and physics of climbing, including friction, chimneying, jamming, protection and leading. Emphasis is on safe, sound techniques. This course covers all aspects of survival in the outdoors including mountain, desert,, open country, and water environments during all seasons. The class also stresses psychological and physiological aspects of survival and ways of adjusting to situations that might end in tragedy. Use of avalanche transceivers, proper search techniques, and rescue skills will be covered in classroom and field experiences. Snow dynamics is a constant thread throughout the training.
