The Center for Emergency Programs strives to use the best instructors available for each of our classes. All instructors meet local and national requirements and have experience both in the classroom and in the field.

Les Chatelain, Director, Center for Emergency Programs

  • Les is not only the Director of the Center for Emergency Programs, he has taught EMS related classes for 25 years. He has worked with publishers to develop textbooks, videos, computer programs and workbooks. He develops web based education programs and supports technology in the classroom. His motto is "If its not fun, its not learning."

Kirk Mittelman , Coordinator, EMT - Advanced Programs

  • Kirk retired in 2001 from Provo City Police after 21 years. Kirk teaches all levels of EMT’s and wilderness medicine and directs the Paramedic Program that is held at the University in cooperation with Mt Nebo Training. Kirk also works part time as a Paramedic Firefighter for Lone Peak Fire District and volunteers for Payson Fire and Rescue. In his spare time Kirk travels to 3rd World countries as a volunteer teaching EMS to physicians, nurses and EMS personnel. When things get too hectic Kirk can be found waterskiing and enjoying the sun at Lake Powell.

Shelly Drage , Coordinator, EMT - Basic Program

 

Mike Ditolla, Coordinator, Wilderness Medicine & Remote Rescue Programs

  • Mike came to the Center for Emergency Programs from the National Outdoor Leadership School Where he has instructed technical skills and wilderness medicine for the past 7 years. Mike's primary areas of instruction for UCEP are: Wilderness Medicine, Avalanche Rescue &Roped Rescue (high angle & vertical cave rescue).

Steve Atkinson, Coordinator, Online Programs

  • Steven Atkinson is a Geriatric Physician Assistant who has worked for the University of Utah since 1995. Though he works for one of the lead hospitals in Denver practicing medicine, his true love is education. He became interested in Internet/Distance Education just before the Internet became "popular." He has several online courses he offers including continuing education for a variety of health care professionals using top-of-the-line tools to make it as interactive as possible.

 Practical Instructors

    We draw practical instructors from many response agencies along the Wasatch Front. These instructors also provide mentoring and internships within their agencies.

 Lab Instructors

    The Center for Emergency Programs employ several lab instructors to assist in teaching over 500 "non-professional" students per year in first aid, CPR, and disaster preparedness.
