The Center for Emergency Programs provides a complete slate of recertification classes and continuing education resources. All of these programs are available to individuals or organizations and most can be tailored to fit your needs. If you are an EMT and not currently working with a response agency, we can even act as your "training officer" and assist you with collecting and organizing your continuing education hours. We provide a variety of formats to meet your needs including classes, seminars, conferences, short courses, web-based, and self study. If you don't see what you need, ask us.

 First Aid

Because of the three year certification period with our first aid classes, we do not offer challenge courses. For the Advanced First Aid/First Responder level course (HEDU 1950) we offer a recertification class where you retake the class under another name (HEDU-3750, First Aid Refresher) and can receive credit for that class also.

Click here for online course offerings.

 CPR

Our CPR Recertification classes cover the material again to be sure that all aspects are refreshed, but move at a much faster pace than "original" training classes. These classes are held on Saturdays, start at 8:00 am, and end as soon as the class has completed the requirements for the level the students are recertifying at. For a schedule of classes click here. To register or for more information call (801) 581-4512. Click on the icon at the bottom of this page.

 Wilderness Medicine

Wilderness medicine recertifications can be accomplished by going through the class again (this is recommended if you have not frequently used your skills during the certification period) or by attending a two-day recertification class. For a nationwide list of classes offered in collaboration with Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS go to http://wmi.nols.edu/ or for local classes click here.

     Lectures

EMTs looking for specific topics can sit in on those lectures in our basic or intermediate classes to obtain the required hours. To schedule these contact Kirk Mittelman at kirk.mittelman@hsc.utah.edu or phone (801) 581-8486. Cost - $35 per session.

     EMT Recert Class

EMTs needing several continuing education topics or hours can register for HEDU 5750 and receive academic credit or for non-credit HEDU 075 and obtain up to 50 hrs in the topic areas you need. This can provide two years worth of hours in some cases. This method also includes skills testing, Utah Practical Recertification Testing and use of the Learning Center. To register or for more information on this class, click here. Cost - $658 for credit, $195 for non-credit.

     Web Based

The Center for Emergency Programs currently offers over 25 hours of continuing education on the web. This number is growing and will cover most topics. To see these classes or to register click here. Cost - $6 per hour.

     Self Study

A limited number of continuing education hours are available in a self study format. For these hours, you will review a series of articles on a topic and report those finding in an oral or written report. For more information contact Kirk Mittelman at kirk.mittelman@hsc.utah.edu or phone (801) 581-8486. Cost - $8 per hour.

     Seminars and Conferences

The Center for Emergency Programs co-sponsors regional seminars throughout Utah. For upcoming dates, check the calendar on this website.

     Contract Classes

Response agencies can contract with the Center for Emergency Programs to provide continuing education to their agency. This can be on a topic by topic basis or we can provide the entire continuing education program including tracking and testing. For more information contact Les Chatelain at les.chatelain@health.utah.edu or (801) 581-4512.

The "U" as your training officer.

The Center for Emergency Programs can provide training officer services for Utah EMTs that are not affiliated with a response agency. This would include consultation on what is required to stay certified and how to recertify at the end of your certification period. We will also track your continuing education hours and report them to the State Bureau of EMS. This service can be provided for response agencies also. For more information call (801) 581-8486. Cost - $25 per person per year.
